Learn how to bake cakes with a really flat surface that’s perfect for frosting with this simple trick!
If you love baking you probably know the importance of a flat cake and wish for the day when you could bake one. Until then it’s just uneven surfaces or domes that make frosting a nightmare! It’s either that or shaving off the surface and hoping to not shave off too much. Unless you have professional equipments it’s almost impossible to make the surface of a cake flat using a kitchen knife. But with this simple trick you don’t even need a knife. The cake bakes without developing a dome and the surface of the cake is absolutely flat so you can pile on as much frosting as you want!
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
- An old t-shirt
- A pair of scissors
That’s it. Sounds too good to be true right? Well, it’s not. Here’s what you need to do:
STEP 1:
This simple trick involves you to cut a strip equivalent to the thickness of the baking tin you’re making your cake in. So if your baking tin is 2-inches high cut the strip with a width of 2-inches. It should be long enough to go around the tin.
STEP 2:
Dampen that strip of fabric and squeeze out excess water. Now using safety pins, fasten the strip around your prepared baking tin tightly. If you need tips on how to prepare a tin for baking go here.
STEP 3:
Once that’s done, pour your batter in the tin and bake as directed in the recipe.
HOW THIS TRICK WORKS?
The simple reason behind this trick is that the damp fabric is making the cake bake more evenly because of all the moisture. Don’t worry about the cloth catching fire, I baked my cake for 35 minutes and it was alright. If you’re going above 45 minutes, you can take the cake out after the 50-minute mark and dampen it again to avoid any fire.
Now pile on your flat surface with frostings and make even cakes each time! Hope you enjoyed his little trick!
